Sailing philosophy and curriculum
HLK Utilizes the US Sailing curriculum with an emphasis on personal responsibility and self reliance
US Sailing's core teaching curriculum is based on a progressive, skills based approach to sailing - and one that works extremely well at instilling the basics of sailing for youth. Our curriculum includes the US Sailing "Learn Sailing the Right Way" as well as a substantial STEM component based on the US Sailing REACH program. HLK's on water instruction is by US Sailing certified instructors.
Our emphasis is primarily on making lifelong sailors rather than "racers". We race, and we love it, but our club has lots besides racing to offer young sailors - starting with plenty of time in "big boats" as part of a crew of like minded kids and adults.
HLK has raceboats for sure, but those boats are just as likely to be sent out on bay trips or as fishing platforms as they are to be racing.
