HLKSailing is committed to a safe environment for both the children and adults, which includes an environment free from unreasonable risk, both physical and emotional.
Physical safety: US Sailing certification, equipment inspections and participation in industry standard risk assessment and controls ensure safe on water experiences for our children, parents, and staff. HLK Sailing is insured the Gowrie Burgee program managed by US Sailing. HLK follows the general principles and practices outlined in the Burgee Junior Sailing Safety Program. This program outlines the details of HLK's risk management approach, including the non-negotiable items such as life jackets, instructor to student ratios, and necessary certifications.
Emotional and personal safety: HLK also participates and follows the U.S. Center for SafeSport principles and guidance in accordance with its role under the US Sailing umbrella. Safesport is an independent non-profit committed to prevention of emotional and physical abuse of athletes. HLK follows the US Sailing model for mandatory reporting and certification under the SafeSport program.
Parents are always welcome and invited to observe, and if possible, participate in HLK events and activities. HLK encourages parents to ask questions and fully inform themselves about our safety philosophy and requirements.
The US Sailing athlete safety program has extensive information, reporting tools, and further links to resources. If you have any questions at all, please email admin@hlksailing.org and if we cannot answer your question we will find someone who can.
